Safely Consuming Cannabis Infused Edibles

Not everyone is a fan of joints or bongs.  Everyone has their preference; even talk show host Chelsea Handler, who had this to say about bongs while hosting a launch party for Cannabis luxury brand

, , earlier this year:

“My first cannabis experience was with a bong. Who came up with that contraption? I went through a paranoid phase. I pulled myself over once on Santa Monica Boulevard once and hid in the bushes for a few hours and then I realized I can’t smoke weed in a bong anymore, but something else must have been in that weed.”

Not everyone has had this type of reaction to bongs, but suffice it to say that everyone has done a little dabbling with different strains and methods of consuming cannabis.

, one of the more sought after choices is to consume cannabis-infused edibles.  If you decide to go this route with enjoying your weed, make sure to do it safely by following these tips.

Do You Know What’s in Your Cannabis-Infused Edible?

Cannabis-Infused edibles can take many forms including brownies, candies, snacks, and other tasty treats.  Edibles don’t require high THC, meaning that you don’t have to get stoned when you indulge. Cannabis consumed orally enters the blood stream after being digested or broken down in the stomach and is absorbed in the intestines.  Eating infused products is.

The high from an edible can take up to two hours to hit, but it’s more intense than other ingestion methods and may last longer.  Many medicinal users trust edibles for their pain relief while also attesting to them as a healthier alternative to inhaling cannabis smoke due to the lack of exposure to carbon, tar, carcinogens, and more.

Safely Consuming Edibles to Counteract Medical Disorders

People who have difficulty eating or have digestive disorders can see benefits from consuming edibles that are high in cannabidiol (CBD).  Cannabis edibles can help counteract feelings of nausea while also providing the individual with a vital source of essential nutrients and calories.  Cancer patients who are suffering from nausea caused by their treatments have been known to use and see regular benefits from consuming edibles in safe doses.  Many patients choose edibles as their preferred method of consumption due to their ability to maintain discretion while they enjoy it.  Others prefer it due to the lasting effects that they receive while ingesting edibles compared to the fast-acting effects of smoking it.

Even though it’s impossible to fatally overdose on marijuana (even when ingesting cannabis-infused edibles), it is entirely possible to have an uncomfortable experience with edible cannabis.  Make sure to start with a small dose of THC (anywhere between 2.5 to 5 mg) and be careful not to re-dose too quickly to ensure you don’t experience any lasting issues.

Get the Most Out Of Your Cannabis Edibles

The exact effect that ingesting edibles will have on you will ultimately depend on several factors such as:

  • The type of edible
  • Its potency
  • Your tolerance
  • Your body chemistry
  • Your diet

If you’re a first time users, make sure you’re aware of the stronger potency and long-lasting effects of edibles before you consume to ensure that you’re not caught off guard.  Some people mention that they experience a heightened sense of anxiety and paranoia when they initially ingest an edible even though edibles are meant to decrease anxiety and stress.  These feelings of anxiety may stem from your body and mind entering uncharted territory.  The heightened uncertainty can lead to feelings of anxiety and paranoia that may lead to an increase in strength at first.  If you still find that you still encounter this feeling after your first time consuming edibles, try switching a strain, lowering the potency of the strain, or changing your diet before you ingest your edible.

When you consume edibles, your high will hit you much more slowly that smoking will.  Whereas you can feel buzzed almost immediately following a toke, it may take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour to reach maximum effect of your edible.  Many people make this mistake when first consuming edibles and find that they overconsume as they don’t fully understand the time-release qualities that edibles have.  The CBD from the edible should funnel through your stomach and digestive system over the course of a 2-6 hour period after consuming.  Once you’ve eclipsed this window of opportunity, you should be able to ingest more edibles (safely).[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]
