Vapes: The Straight Talk Nobody’s Giving You

Ask five people whether vaping weed is “better for you” and you’ll get five confident, contradictory answers. Here’s what we actually know, minus the panic and minus the sales pitch.

Are vapes healthy? We looked into it.

To start, a

heats either oil (the cartridge in your pocket) or actual flower (a dry-herb device) hot enough to release cannabinoids as vapor but not hot enough to set anything on fire. No combustion means no smoke, and smoke is where most of the nasty byproducts of a joint come from: tar, carbon monoxide, the burnt-plant stuff your lungs don’t love.

So,

? Well, let’s take a closer look at that. avoids combustion, and that’s a real difference. Studies comparing vaporized flower to smoked flower consistently find in vapor. But “fewer toxins than smoke” is not the same as “safe,” and the long-term data on specifically just doesn’t exist yet. The honest answer is that it’s likely less harsh than smoking, not risk-free, and anyone telling you otherwise in either direction is guessing.

There is a caveat to this all. Or, an elephant in the room so to speak. And that’s 2019. You may remember the vape-injury scare (the CDC called it EVALI). Here’s the part that got lost in the headlines, and it’s that the injuries were overwhelmingly tied to illicit-market carts cut with vitamin E acetate, a thickener that should never be inhaled. Licensed dispensary products in legal states are tested for exactly this kind of thing. Which leads to the single most important sentence in this article: where you buy matters more than what you buy. A tested cart from a licensed shop and a mystery cart from a guy are not the same product category.

What can you do? Begin by reading labels like a pro. It’s a strong way

— or revisit — your relationship with vapes.
” means THC stripped down and refined as in strong, consistent, a little flavorless. “” means extracted from fresh-frozen plants, keeping more of the aroma compounds (terpenes) — tastier, usually pricier. “Live ” is the same fresh-frozen idea but extracted with pressure instead of solvents — the connoisseur tier. None of these words means “better for you.” They’re flavor-and-process words, not health words.

One more honest note: vapes are efficient and discreet, which is also their trap. It’s very easy to take one more puff of something that’s 80–90% THC. Flower is maybe 20–30%. Oil carts are concentrates so treat them like it.

The one-line takeaway is that you should buy tested, start low, and be suspicious of anyone with a strong opinion and something to sell you.
