At this exact moment in time, an enormous number of people are simultaneously caffeinated and high. Wake and bake is a well-known phrase for a reason. The coffee-and-a-joint morning is perhaps one of the most widely practiced drug combinations on earth.
The research on it consists of, roughly, some rats and a few monkeys. There isn’t a ton of research on how cannabis and coffee interact in the human body. Two of the most-used psychoactive substances in human history, and we’re extrapolating from squirrel monkeys.
That’s not very helpful in the slightest. Regardless, let’s a take a look at the limited information.
A 2014 study published in the by researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse let squirrel monkeys self-administer THC by pulling a lever, then dosed them with MSX-3, a caffeine-like compound. The result was dose-dependent and counterintuitive. At a low dose that was roughly equivalent to less than half a cup of coffee, the monkeys pulled the lever less. Interesting. At a higher dose, around one or more cups, they gave themselves more THC.
Two readings of that are both plausible. Either a little caffeine makes THC more rewarding, so less is needed — or a lot of caffeine dulls the high, so more is required to compensate. NIDA’s Sergi Ferré has noted that caffeine dramatically amplifies the effects of substances that release dopamine, THC included. What’s not in dispute is the shape: the interaction flips depending on dose. Your two-cup morning and your four-cup morning are not the same experiment.
Now, here’s some information you might not want to hear. A
in the British Journal of Pharmacology tested the combination on working memory in rats, and the finding was the opposite of the intuition. THC impaired memory on its own and fine, that’s all known information. But adding caffeine made it worse, not better. Low THC doses that barely registered became problematic once caffeine was added, producing deficits comparable to much higher THC doses alone. The animals performed better on either substance alone than on both together.So the folk theory — that coffee sharpens you up and counteracts the fog — appears to be exactly backwards, at least in rats, at least for short-term memory. The subjective feeling of alertness and actual cognitive performance are coming apart. You feel more awake and remember less.
Why do these two systems collide in the first place?

Adenosine receptors sit on both sides of the synapse, which puts them in a position to modulate a lot of other signaling. This includes, it appears, the endocannabinoid system. The two aren’t independent lanes. They’re crossing traffic.What this means for you, especially if you’re a casual use of THC and caffeine. Nothing alarming. There’s no serious risks or side effects have been established for the combination. But a few honest takeaways: the interaction is real and dose-dependent, so more coffee doesn’t mean more balance; don’t count on caffeine to sober you up cognitively, since the evidence points the other way; and if you’re doing anything that requires holding information in your head, this is the combination to be most humble about.

Millions of people run this combination daily, and the best available evidence involves lab rodents and a decade-old primate study. That’s not a knock on the researchers; it’s the fifty-year federal research restriction showing up in yet another place. The most common cannabis pairing in the world is essentially unstudied in humans. Worth being a little annoyed about.
