Nerds. How I love thee. I cannot count the ways.
By now this humble editor’s love of all things Nerds-related is fairly well-known among the High There team; prior to our… shall we say “new global trend of remote work”, there were multiple bribery attempts at my desk involving large boxes of various flavors of Nerds (Were those bribes successful? I like to provide anonymity with my services).
So when this article topic came down the pipeline there wasn’t really any discussion about who would write it – My editor realized there was only one choice and placed it in my queue with little hesitation. My time is now.
Nerds Ropes. They’re like a box of nerds, but with the joy of chewy, fruity-sweet gummy bears in the center. This mini-candy coated confection is an all-time fave, and once you’ve been exposed to the galaxy-brained genius idea that is Nerds Ropes But With Weed? Life may ever be the same. Enough talk, though – Let’s get this recipe added to your cannabis cookbook!
Nerd Rope Edibles Recipe
This recipe cribs most of it’s ingredients and techniques from our “
” article – For more information on the science behind why this recipe works and other pro tips, make sure to click the link above. To start, we’ll need the following:
Tools:
- Saucepan
- Whisk
- Spatula
- Plastic or Silicone Kitchen Syringe or Squeeze Bottle
- Non-Stick Cooking Spray
Note: Candy molds are not needed for this recipe.
Ingredients:
- Pre-Packaged Gelatin Dessert (IE: Jell-O): One 3oz package, flavor of your choice
- Unflavored Gelatin: Either 2.5 tablespoons of gelatin powder or 7.5 gelatin sheets; we recommend buying high-quality gelatin for extra firmness
- Water: 1/2 cup, cold
- Corn Syrup: 1/4th cup
- Sunflower/Soy Lecithin: 2 teaspoons
- Nerds Candies: One of the large “mixed flavor” boxes will work well, but feel free to mix it up with different styles and varieties
If using cannabis-infused coconut oil we recommend 1/4 cup for this recipe. For other cannabis concentrates such as hash oil, dose accordingly and add 1/4 cup of non-infused coconut oil to round the recipe out.
Step 1: Bloom & Simmer
First, bloom your Jell-O and gelatin in cold water; if using powder, soak for a minimum of 5 minutes, while sheets will require 10.
After blooming, combine this mixture with corn syrup in a high-walled sauce pot, letting it reach a bare simmer over medium-low heat.
As the mixture heats gently whisk to combine. Make sure the gelatin does not boil, as this can prevent it from setting. If foam begins to form this can be removed, but ultimately does not effect the flavor of the end product.
Step 2: Cool & Mix
As the mixture heats it should begin to lose it’s grainy texture and become more homogenized. Once completely smooth remove from the heat and begin to let the mixture cool.
After the gelatin has cooled off a bit (it should still be warm to the touch, but not skin-burningly hot) you can now add your lecithin and weed infused coconut oil (or regular oil + cannabis concentrate). Stir quickly to combine.
Step 3: Spread & Coat
First, spread out a layer of Nerds candies onto a sheet of parchment paper. Fill your kitchen syringe or squeeze bottle with your gummy mixture and, working quickly, pipe a thin, even strand over the top of your candies.
Once your desired length has been reached either pull away quickly or snip the end of the gummy line off with a pair of scissors. Now toss to coat completely with your candies, pressing down gently into the gummy rope if needed to ensure adhesion.
Repeat as many times as needed to use up all of your gummy mix/candies and you’re done. You now have THC-infused Nerd Ropes of your very own! These delicious, tart & sweet cannabis edibles are a perfect way to enjoy a dose of THC, and make an excellent break from the usual gummy bears and chocolates lining cannabis dispensary shelves.
Storing Your THC Nerd Ropes
Now that you’ve made your Nerd Ropes, what to do with them? Assuming you don’t eat them all before you get a chance to store them we’ve found that ziplock-style bags with a couple of silicone desiccant packs thrown inside tend to work best.
If you have some super-long resealable kitchen tubs hanging around too those would work great, but the elongated nature of Nerd Ropes means they’re a candy that’s usually only able to fit in more flexible containers.
Recipe Hack: Weed Nerd Gummy Clusters
Of course, if you’re looking for a candy a bit more portable than Nerd Ropes tend to be, how about home made Nerd Gummy Clusters instead? These bite-sized takes on Nerd Ropes recently hit store shelves and have been selling out like crazy; now you can make your own at home, with all the joys of cannabis included.
To make Nerd Ropes Gummy Clusters (With Weed) just follow our above recipe and, instead of making one long rope from your gummy mixture, make smaller gumdrop-like shapes. That’s it! Again, toss with your candies to combine, but otherwise the only difference between regular Nerd Ropes and the Gummy Clusters is shape, so play around until you find a gummy shape that you like the most.
Wrapping Up
