Learning how to make weed lollipops is just as simple and easy as learning to make as hard candies, and they can be enjoyed over a longer, more drawn out period of time. The addition of the lollipop stick can also make these more appealing to medical cannabis patients over other weed edibles, as some conditions such as seizures or muscle spasms could lead to choking with an untethered candy.
Ready to make your own? Let’s go over a weed lollipops recipe that’s both quick and easy to follow along with at home!
Basic Marijuana Lollipop Recipe
This recipe is essentially the same as the recipe discussed in our “
To make weed lollipops you’ll need the following:
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cups water (filtered recommended)
- 2/3 cups light corn syrup
- 1 tsp. flavoring oil of choice
- 1 tsp. cannabis extract; we recommend using either alcohol cannabis tinctures or something as close to pure THC concentrate as possible. Weaker extracts like cannabutter or coconut cannabis oil won’t work as strongly
- 1 tsp. citric/malic acid (if needed)
- Food coloring (if desired)
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Either a parchment paper lined baking sheet or a set of hard candy molds – do not use molds intended for chocolates or other candies for this (or any hard candy) recipe
- Heavy-bottomed cooking pot, preferably with a pour spout on the rim
- Lollipop sticks of your choice
- Candy thermometer (optional)
The First Steps
First, prepare your work surface and/or candy molds with non-stick cooking spray. Without stirring, bring your sugar, corn syrup and water mixture to a rolling boil. Keep a constant eye on the solution as it cooks, checking its temperature regularly with either a candy thermometer or via the cold water test (again, see our hard candy article for more details).
Once the sugar/corn syrup mixture has reached the hard crack temperatures of 300°F to 310°F remove from your heat source and add in your cannabis extract, flavorings and food coloring. Remember, going for a citrus variety (IE: lemon flavor), make sure to toss in some additional citric acid.
Adding the Stick
If using hard silicon molds specially designed for lollipops your sticks can be inserted immediately; the lollipop molds should be able to support the stick’s weight without it sinking through to the opposite side of the candy.
To make weed lollipops without lollipop molds simply pour your hot mixture into small rounds on your parchment paper. Let the candy cool for just a moment, until it has stopped spreading over the paper and seems to be holding an “edge.”
Now, without actually touching the still incredibly hot cannabis candy mixture, firmly press your stick into the molten mass – letting the mixture cool for a few seconds will ensure gravity doesn’t pull your stick down to the bottom side of the candy.
From here your cannabis lollipops are ready to eat as soon as the candy has completely cooled. Storage remains the same as with hard candies, though individually wrapping each of your cannabis lollipops in cellophane is a nice touch for presentation.
Individual lollipop wrappers and storage bags can be found easily online and usually in fairly large packages. We recommend a few extra-fancy kitchen ties, pipe cleaners or ribbon to add a decorative flair, particularly if planning on giving away your weed lollipops as gifts. If you are instead hoarding all these tasty adult sucker treats for yourself, a simple plastic sandwich bag will do.
Why Stick Choice Matters
While often overlooked during the eating process, your choice of stick can have a big impact on your end edible. Wax-coated paper lollipop sticks are readily available at most big box retailers and online outlets; wooden lollipop sticks are very traditional but their tough and solid nature could prove harmful if bitten down on or otherwise broken, making paper sticks always a safe bet. For patients with severe tremors and muscle issues, the ring-shaped “safety pop” sticks are also available for purchase.
Specific molds do exist for lollipop making, and they’ll work just as well for your cannabis lollipops as the non-psychoactive kind – these can usually be found at any retail source that offers regular hard candy molds. These molds are not a requirement, though, as weed lollipops can be made easily using the “sheet pan and parchment paper” method from our recipe.
We hope we’ve shown you that, like any other weed recipe, making THC lollipops at home doesn’t have to be a terrifying experience. And, unlike other cannabis lollipop recipes on the internet, we hope we’ve been able to give you a few tips and tricks that will make your cannabis candy concoctions shine. Happy cooking!
