Walk into any dispensary in America and within thirty seconds someone will ask you the defining question of modern weed retail: indica or sativa? Everyone knows the answer they’re supposed to give. Indica for couch, sativa for energy, and hybrid for hedging.
Now that framework as the organizing principle of an entire industry doesn’t hold up.
But what do the genetics actually show? In 2021, researchers at Dalhousie University, working with the Dutch medical producer Bedrocan, did
everyone should have done decades ago. They took over 100 cannabis samples, measured their , and genotyped them at more than 100,000 genetic markers. The finding, published in Nature Plants: samples labeled “sativa” and “indica” were genetically indistinct on a genome-wide scale. Overall genetic structure explained only about 37% of the variance in how things were labeled.It gets better. The researchers also found that two samples sold under the identical cultivar name — two jars both saying “OG Kush” — were often as genetically and chemically distant from each other as samples with completely different names. .A 2022 analysis went bigger, examining nearly 90,000 commercial samples across six U.S. states and finding that products labeled indica, sativa, and hybrid were chemically intermingled with no clear separation — and that the whole labeling framework performed worse than simply grouping products by their dominant terpene.
Where the labels came from (and why they were never about effects).
In 1753, Linnaeus described a European hemp plant as Cannabis sativa, that’s tall with narrow leaves. In 1785, Lamarck described an Indian variety as Cannabis indica, this one was short, bushy, and bore broad leaves. These were
of how the plants looked, not how they made anyone feel. Two centuries of crossbreeding then collapsed whatever distinction existed. We took a description of plant shape and just promoted it to a prediction about your evening.So what does predict the experience?
The chemistry. Cannabis produces hundreds of aromatic compounds called terpenes (aka, the same family of molecules that make pine smell like pine and lemons smell like lemons), and there’s real evidence a cultivar’s terpene profile shapes its psychoactive character. The Dalhousie team found the label associations that did exist traced back to a small handful of terpene synthase genes, not to any broad genetic signature of “indica-ness.”
Sativa-labeled plants tended to carry more of the tea-like and fruity terpenes, while indica-labeled samples ran higher in earthy ones like myrcene, which is the honest kernel inside the myth. The labels aren’t random, they’re just a blurry proxy for something you could measure directly.
A little cannabis cheat sheet:
1. Myrcene — earthy, musky. The one most associated with heavy, relaxing profiles.
2. Limonene — citrus. Associated with mood elevation and alertness.
3. Pinene — pine. Associated with clarity.
4. Linalool — lavender, floral. The calming one.
5. Caryophyllene — pepper. Unusual: it actually binds to a cannabinoid receptor.
6. Terpinolene — floral, herbal. Common in the “energizing” bucket.
When it comes downto shopping, ask for the terpene profile, not the category — better dispensaries have it on the lab report. If a jar smells like a lemon grove and you liked the last thing that smelled like a lemon grove, that’s more reliable information than the word “sativa” on the label. Your nose is doing real analytical chemistry.
And if indica/sativa has been working for you personally, well, you’re not imagining things. You’ve just been using a rough proxy for terpene profiles this whole time. Now you can skip the middleman.
