What is 710? A Quick Primer on the Concentrate Holiday

Cannabis consumer or not, many folks are already well aware of the

holiday, which started as a protest against restrictive cannabis legislation and has turned into an all-out celebration of everything weed. Though, as we inch through the summer, whispers of another canna-centric holiday are on the lips of concentrate lovers: 710.

While the July 10 weed holiday is lesser known and celebrated, it acts as the go-to day to relish in the joys of cannabis extracts and concentrates, such as wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, cannabis oils, distillate and more.

Though some may wonder, “Why July 10?” or what exactly the distinction is between this holiday and 420. For those folks, High There is here to help.

What is 710? The Simple Truth

The story behind the date 710 is far simpler than many may think. If you flip the number 710 upside down, it simply resembles the word “

.”

Celebrations for 710 were first noted back in 2012, with the

celebrating various cannabis extracts and oils, though it’s likely that consumers were celebrating the holiday even earlier. After Washington and Colorado legalized cannabis, extracts became a much more normalized product within the cannabis library, as companies continued perfecting the art of cannabis extraction and the multitude of that result from the process.

Prior to legalization, it was more challenging to create cannabis extracts, given that the process can lead to combustion and there were no quality assurance or safety regulations in place.

While 420 is surely the main cannabis holiday — an all-encompassing holiday promoting the consumption and celebration of any and all cannabis products — 710 is solely focused on cannabis concentrates.

710 Products

For a quick primer on cannabis concentrates: These products are the result of distilling down the most desirable elements of the plant, including cannabinoids and terpenes, with none of the excess plant material. The use of cannabis concentrates is often referred to as “dabbing,” which involves a dab rig or a concentrate-safe vaporizer.

A rig is similar to a bong, though instead of a bowl for flower, it dons a glass “nail.” Users typically use a metal tool to gather a dollop of concentrate to consume, use a torch to get the nail red hot and once it has cooled to an ideal temperature, so as not to fry the precious terpenes in the concentrate, the user releases the concentrate into the nail. There are also electronic nails available for those who love convenience.

After the concentrate hits the nail and begins to vaporize, the user will put a carb cap — essentially a glass piece built to restrict airflow and allow users to inhale the vapor — on top of the nail and continue inhaling, exhaling the vapor and inhaling again as needed, until the concentrate has been fully vaporized.

Cannabis concentrates are great for folks looking for a quick high, as they routinely test at far higher cannabinoid percentages than follow alone, and the process generally takes just a couple of minutes, as opposed to smoking a joint or bowl, which is generally a longer process. Concentrates are also great for consumers looking to dive deeper into the terpene flavor profile of cannabis strains.

Dabbing sometimes gets a bad reputation, as the use of a blowtorch and application of intense heat is viewed in a negative light. This imagery is often viewed as more extreme than other methods of cannabis consumption or mirroring the use of other drugs.

Though, just in the last decade, the concentrate market has grown significantly. As legalization swept across the country, cannabis producers are discovering new and innovative ways to create concentrates, sometimes

, with exceptionally rich terpene profiles and increasingly higher cannabinoids.

While many consumers enjoy concentrates recreationally, they’ve also proved to be beneficial as an alternative method of ingestion for medical patients.

Celebrating the Holiday

So, what do you need to do to celebrate 710? Just like its close sibling, 420, it’s simply a great day to use cannabis concentrates and relish in the unique, ever-evolving product. Some will opt to specifically time a dab with 7:10 a.m. or p.m. as well. It’s also simply a fun day to geek out about the love of dabs.

In addition, just like 420, dispensaries surely take note of the 710 holiday, and it’s a great time to check out some of your local shops to stock up and take advantage of deals on your favorite concentrates. While this holiday is not as widely celebrated as 420, you’ll likely find shops running multiple-day specials if you can’t make it in on the day itself.

We extend our best 710 wishes to those who celebrate, and happy dabbing!
